CeBIT is the largest and most internationally represented computer expo. The trade fair is held each year on the Hanover fairground, Germany. It is considered a barometer of current trends and a measure of the state of the art in information technology. With an exhibition area of roughly 450,000 m² (5 million ft²) and over 330,000 visitors in 2015, it is the largest IT fair worldwide.

But these trends are becoming more and more part of the automotive industry. Not only regarding production processes, also related to finally assembled cars. E.g., the exhibition area for smart cars at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas increased by roughly 30% compared with the 2015 event, demonstrating that cars are no longer just a means of transport, but have become connected to consumers’ social lives.

Say Goodbye to The Car as a Device for Getting Us from Point A to Point B
So say goodbye to the car as a device for getting us from A to B and say hello to the car as an app. There may still be skepticism about IoT in some sectors, but in the automotive industry, IoT is taking up ever more space in our vehicles.
Just a few years ago, we as a car-crazy nation thought voice control for mobile navigation devices and a few other functions like multi-function steering wheel or keyless entry systems were the absolute cutting edge, even though the first systems weren’t particularly good listeners. This year Tesla Motors is making a transatlantic trip to CeBIT 2016 to show what 21st century automotive engineering could look like.
The U.S. engineers are making use of the built-in sensors of the Model S to implement the autopilot—harnessing a radar system, ultrasound sensors, front camera and much more so that this high-tech car can accelerate, brake and steer for itself.
This is also being driven by big car manufacturers such as Toyota, who will be investing $1 billion over the next five years in AI for self-driving cars. But Tesla Motors is still a few steps ahead of the big global players.
