The EU General Data Protection Regulation is a hot topic right now. Some may feel the GDPR is a compliance burden but it’s not. Instead, it gives businesses the opportunity to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

Businesses today are rapidly accumulating data that identifies individuals. How that data is used and managed, and the degree to which it protects individual privacy, varies greatly. With the GDPR, this will change.

Why complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is important

New GDPR rules will protect the privacy of European residents and any businesses that deal with them. For those who don’t comply with the new regulations for processing personal data, they will face penalties, which is why compliance is necessary. Ensuring GDPR compliance can be challenging for some organizations and many are just starting to realize the volume of work that needs to be done.

To help you better understand the GDPR and how your organization can achieve compliance, we’ve put together the podcast, GDPR: Compliance burden or business opportunity?, which you can listen to below, and the white paper, IFS Information Security: General Data Protection Regulation.

Is the GDPR a compliance burden or business opportunity?

In this IFS Radio Network podcast, Richard Rogers, podcast host and Chief Information Security Officer at IFS, discusses the GDPR with Steve Treagust, one of IFS’s Global Industry Directors who has a specific interest in corporate governance and compliance, and consider why it is perhaps wrong to look on this regulation as a compliance burden rather an opportunity for organizations to leverage their compliance as a differentiator in their respective markets.

Questions answered and points discussed in this podcast include:

  • When did IFS start looking at compliance with the GDPR and what have been the primary activities undertaken?
  • Has it been an easy project?
  • Thoughts on the level of preparedness by country as reported by W8 Data
  • Advice for organizations still needing to tackle the GDPR compliance challenge
